Colon Cancer

Approach to Colon Cancer

Most patients diagnosed with colon cancer can be treated effectively with the expectation of an excellent long term survival outcome. The primary treatment of colon cancer is surgical removal of the area of colon. Advances in colon cancer management and the application of laparoscopic techniques have allowed surgical oncologists to effectively remove colon cancers surgically with significantly fewer side effects and shorter recovery times. Dr. Ellenhorn is an expert in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for colon cancer having performed hundreds of operations for colon cancer during his 18 years as surgical oncologist and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center.

Dr. Ellenhorn believes that the focus must be on the patient during the entire process of  treatment. Dr. Ellenhorn‘s approach to colon cancer treatment is to coordinate multidisciplinary management. An individualized treatment plan is developed after meeting with and reviewing treatment options and goals with the patient along with Medical Oncologists and Radiation Oncologists. Effective cancer treatment is of primary importance. Quality of Life is equally important as is the avoidance of ostomies or bags.
