Gastric Cancer

Approach to Gastric (Stomach) Cancer

It is critical that gastric cancer or stomach cancer surgery is performed by a surgeon experienced in both gastric surgery and in the removal of lymph nodes around the stomach. Radical removal of lymph nodes, known as D2 lymph node dissection, is essential to prevent gastric cancer recurrence.  Only surgical oncologists trained in D2 lymph node dissection are capable of performing effective gastric cancer surgery. Dr. Ellenhorn has performed hundreds of gastric cancer operations with D2 lymphadenectomy and has trained many surgical oncology trainees to perform this complex procedure.

Dr. Ellenhorn has been a pioneer in the development of minimally invasive approaches to gastric cancer. He has performed more minimally invasive Laparoscopic Gastrectomy and da Vinci Robotic Gastrectomy procedures for gastric cancer than any other surgeon in the Western United States. He has published numerous scholarly articles and instructional videos on the subject of Laparoscopic and da Vinci Robotic Gastrectomy. Use of these minimally invasive approaches results in better and faster recovery with far fewer complications. His recent research has shown that patients who undergo Laparoscopic Gastrectomy and Robotic Gastrectomy have an excellent Quality of Life after surgery.
