Pancreatic Cancer

Approach to Pancreatic Cancer

Dr. Ellenhorn has significant expertise as a high volume surgeon treating patients with pancreatic cancer. For the past 10 years he has performed most of the pancreatic surgery at City of Hope National Medical Center.  He has been a pioneer in the use of minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic approaches to pancreatic surgery and in the implementation of aggressive vascular resection and reconstruction for locally advanced pancreatic cancer. During his career he has performed hundreds of  pancreaticoduodenectomy or Whipple procedures with excellent results, often in elderly patients.

The approach to the patient with pancreatic cancer must take into account the aggressive biology of some types of pancreatic tumors. Some patients with locally advanced or aggressive pancreatic cancers are best treated with chemotherapy and radiation treatment before surgical resection. This can result in much better outcomes following surgical resection. Other patients are best treated with surgical resection alone or surgical resection followed by combined chemotherapy and radiation.
