What is Surgical Oncology?

Surgical oncology is a specialty that focuses on the surgical treatment of a variety of tumors, the most common being breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic and gastric cancer, liver tumors, melanoma, and endocrine tumors. Surgical oncology requires a specialized two year training program after a general surgery residency. Currently training comes from programs approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO).
